1.  Chinese Martial arts - a brief intro
   • Martial arts styles are normally classified according to common themes 
   • themes examples :philosophical ideas such as Taoism, Buddhism, techniques such as focus on inner energy or external movement
2. Major styles

• Geographic
  
1. northern(北派) - feature deeply extended postures  connected by quick fluid transitions; focus on legwork, kicking and acrobatics (八卦掌) 戳腳s Baguazhang, Bajiquan, Chāquán, Chuojiao, Eagle Claw, Northern Praying Mantis and Taijiquan. Chángquán
2. southern(南派) features low stable stances and short powerful movements that combines both attack and defense; applies to the five family styles of Southern China: Choy Gar (蔡家), Hung Ga (洪家), Lau Gar (刘家), Li (Lee) Family (李家) and Mok Gar (莫家). Nanquan (Southern Fist)

1. 外家characterized by fast and explosive movements and a focus on physical strength and agility.adapted for competition and exercise
   
2. 內家focus on the practice of such elements as awareness of the spirit, mind, qi (breath, or energy flow) and the use of relaxed leverage
